The Award

The Volpentest Leadership Award—affectionately known as the "Sammy"—is presented each year at the Leadership Tri-Cities Community Reception. In honor of its namesake, the award is intended to recognize individuals that have:

  • demonstrated a history of making positive difference in the community
  • exemplary leadership capabilities
  • a commitment to the Tri-Cities region.

The Recipient

On August 7, LTC Class XIV was introduced to the community after a long day of team building at the Ropes Course in Columbia Park.

That evening, LTC also presented the “Sammy Award” to an outstanding community member.  This award honors the memory of Sam Volpentest and recognizes any Tri-Cities leader who exemplifies Volpentest’s commitment to the development of a healthy and vibrant community.

LTC honored this year’s recipient of the Volpentest Leadership Award, John Givens, whose professional and civic work has brought about much positive impact in the community.

From economic development to judging 4H equestrians at the Benton-Franklin County Fair, John has demonstrated exemplary leadership abilities that significantly contributed to making this community a better place to live.

Currently vice president at AmericanWest Bank, John is well known for his work as the Port of Kennewick’s previous executive director.

Highlights of his accomplishments include:

  • Tirelessly advocating to maintaining multiple uses on the Columbia-Snake River System.

  • Promoting river shore enhancement and tourism activities.
  • Volunteering for community services as a member of Benton County Fairgrounds Advisory Board, Kiwanis Club, Shrine Club, etc.
